Event Date:

November 3, 2023

Event Time:

3:00 pm

Event Location:

Hammock Campgrounds - Jennings State Forest

Our Intro to Backpacking Adventure is a low-risk, high-reward first step toward overnight backpacking. Under the guidance of our founding outfitter, Joe Bassett, you’ll launch day hikes from a base camp where you’ll practice trail etiquette, Leave No Trace principles, tent construction, and packing and hiking skills without the stress that often comes with a first overnight hike.

Cost: $129

This adventure requires a minimum of 2 pre-paid registrations. The group maximum is 5 persons. (If you have a group of more than 5 individuals, please contact us at info@valiantoutfitters.com for information on one of our Premium Private Backpacking Adventures.

Paid registration includes an hour-long virtual (Zoom) Personal Outfitting Session ($99 value), trail and/or park permits, shuttle between trailheads (if needed), and your guide.

A tip for your guide is not included in the cost.

Itinerary

Day 1: You’ll meet your guide at Jennings State Forest, Dunns Farm Trailhead Comples at 2:00 PM. Once everyone has arrived your guide will distribute any rental gear followed by the first session which will cover basic outdoor safety, first-aid, navigation, and Leave No Trace principles.

Then we’ll load our backpacks and head out on the Crosscut Trail to the Crosscut Tentsite for a break.

After cooking and enjoying supper your guide will lead a short evening hike before returning to relax around the campfire. Your guide will then bore you to exhaustion with tales of his wilderness adventures (some of which are true).

Day 2: Rise-and-shine is 7:00 AM followed by breakfast as soon as you can cook it. At 8:00 we’ll gather for a primer on Leave No Trace and navigation. Then comes the gear “shakedown” to learn what is really needed, and what is not, on a backpacking adventure. After the shakedown, we’ll load our packs and set out for a 3-4 mile mock overnight hike. During the mock overnight hike, we’ll discuss the 5 Ws of campsite location (water, wood, wind, widowmakers, wildlife), trail etiquette, foot care, and more.

Once we select our campsite we’ll set up camp for our mock overnight stay, cook lunch, and talk about the experience of an actual overnight hike.

We’ll then pack up and hike back to base camp where we’ll cook and enjoy supper before reviewing and recapping all that we’ve learned. The official adventure will conclude with breaking down our basecamps at about 7:00 before saying goodbye.

Day 3 (optional): Guest are welcome to stay a second night at basecamp if they are willing to risk more campfire stories from the guide. Rise-and-shine is at the guest’s pleasure as long as their base camp is broken down and returned to the guide by 10:00 AM. (All base campsites must be vacated by 11:00 AM.)

Guide

This adventure is guided by our founding outfitter Joe Bassett. Joe has personally scouted this trail and planned this hike specifically for beginner and novice backpackers. He’ll draw on more than 40 years of outdoor, nature, and wilderness survival experience to make sure that you enjoy your new skills and the wonder of the trail. Papa Epic, as his grandkids call him, believes that it’s impossible to be in the wilderness and in a bad mood at the same time. He founded Valiant Outfitters specifically to share that philosophy with young and old, novice and expert alike.

One More Thing

Time spent in the wilderness is rewarding and challenging, however, sometimes it’s downright uncomfortable. But learning to rejoice in spite of the circumstance is part of the point, right? So keeping a positive mindset is important to get the most from the experience. When things go “sideways” we encourage each other to “embrace the suck.”
